Australian monthly inflation stalls

The first 2018 print of the monthly Melbourne Institute Inflation Gauge has come in and its not exactly setting the world on fire:

  • +0.1 % m/m (prior +0.4%)
  • +2.3 % y/y (prior +2.7%)
  • ‘Trimmed mean’ in at +0.1% m/m and +2.2% y/y

One of the staggering holes in official data collecting – putting aside the ridiculous way the CPI is assembled – is the lack of a monthly measure, unlike the rest of the developed world:
