Another big trade surplus recorded in January

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today released trade data for the month of January, with Australia’s trade surplus retracing to $1,302 million from $3,334 million (revised) in December.

In seasonally adjusted terms, exports fell by $945 million (3%) to $31,796 million in January, whereas imports rose by $1,088 million (4%) to $30,494 million driven by consumption goods (+$543 million or 7%), intermediate and other merchandise goods (+$340 million or 4%), and capital goods (+$180 million or 3%).
