Hard landing coming as dwelling approvals continue to fall

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released dwelling approvals data for the month of December. At the national level, the number of dwelling approvals fell by a seasonally adjusted 1.2% to 17,327. The overall fall was driven by detached houses, which fell by 1.6%, more than offsetting a 0.9% increase in unit approvals.

In the year to December 2016, dwelling approvals fell by a seasonally-adjusted 11.4%, with unit approvals down by 13.0% and detached house approvals down by 9.6%:
