Immigration falls to 9-year low

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released visitor arrivals and departures data for the month of May, which registered another fall in annual immigration to the lowest level in 9 years.

In the year to May 2016, there were 679,810 permanent and long-term arrivals into Australia – down 5,660 from May 2015 and well down from the record 792,500 arrivals set in the year to January 2013 – partly offset by 412,740 permanent and long-term departures from Australia (see next chart).
