Parko: Reform tax or watch living standards fall

Incoming secretary of the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet (PM&C), Dr Martin Parkinson, delivered another important sermon yesterday to a tax forum in Sydney, whereby he warned that Australia faces falling living standards if it does not reform its 1950s tax system. Dr Parkinson also noted, once again, that while raising/broadening the GST would be regressive, so too would allowing income taxes to rise via bracket creep. From The Canberra Times:

[Dr Parkinson]said the Turnbull government had a genuine opportunity to realign federal and state tax relations to set the country up for sustainable economic growth, but all governments had to work together to achieve this.
