It’s the cost of land, stupid!

Building-related companies have today questioned the merits of further demand-side measures aimed at improving housing affordability, such as granting early access to super and allowing stamp duty to be payed in installments, instead arguing that the main solution is to free up land supply and constipated state and local government planning processes. From The AFR:

CSR managing director Rob Sindel said… “The cost of building the house doesn’t go up that much year-to-year because we’ve got more efficient. It is the cost of land that’s gone up,” he said.
