Unemployment in detail: the trend is no friend

As summarised earlier, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today released labour force data for the month of January, which registered a sharp increase in the headline unemployment rate to 6.4% from 6.1% in December, with unemployment climbing to the highest level since June 2002.

The result disappointed analyst’s expectations of a smaller increase in unemployment to 6.2%.
