Denialists have basically just done a search and replace on creationist “arguments”. From memory he also argues that there’s no link between smoking and cancer. skippy November 14, 2014 at 8:49 pm The problem for rank deniers is, not only does the scientific community have consensus, but, both governments and most large cap corporations, not beholden to activity’s, which are threatened by acknowledgment of AGW, and assorted knock on effects skippy… sometimes it seems some want too… push the rapture index up on purpose. http://www.raptureready.com/rap2.html Ratcunning November 15, 2014 at 12:02 am From http://www.raptureready.com “You could say the Rapture index is a Dow Jones Industrial Average of end time activity, but I think it would be better if you viewed it as prophetic speedometer. The higher the number, the faster we’re moving towards the occurrence of pre-tribulation rapture.” Wow, the AntiChrist only got a 3 But Climate got a 4 Clearly we need to wage a jihad against all the non believers, in this just holy war against those who don’t share our opinion, of the moral righteousness and dire urgency of AGW mitigation. skippy November 15, 2014 at 9:38 am “Clearly we need to wage a jihad against all the non believers, in this just holy war against those who don’t share our opinion, of the moral righteousness and dire urgency of AGW mitigation.” – ratcunning Herein lies the problem “those who don’t share our opinion”, to some ideologues or esoteric sorts, everything is an **opinion**. Opinions which are the result of a vast array of biases, accepted truisms and deployed falsism. Where the only condition to beautification, of ones opinion based argument, is the inability of others to countenance its self evident objectivity. At the end of the day it just ends up as the best narrative wins. History is chocker block with the best narrative being the mechanism by which whole societies diminish themselves or brought about their own collapse. The unfortunate thing is you can’t refute a belief, that takes an epiphany on part of the believer and sadly believers have a bad habit of doubling down when their beliefs are challenged. Then you have the Upton poster children that have vested interests thingy. Skippy… yet as corroborated data from a wide field [numerous scientific depts.] of more rigorous examinations, keeps mounting, some want to play games with just the one i.e. climate and wrt that, only focus on a few pet or canned talking points, temp, the sun, or liken it to some eugenics program. Silly stuff…. desmodromic November 15, 2014 at 7:00 am Why does this topic generate so much heated discussion? The weather is not the climate and Science doesn’t care what opinion you hold. Move on. drsmithyMEMBER November 15, 2014 at 11:45 am Why does this topic generate so much heated discussion? The weather is not the climate and Science doesn’t care what opinion you hold. Move on. Because a small but vocal group of people with disproportionate influence on policy people believe that the Science has been, and is being, fabricated by corrupt and dishonest researchers over multiple generations, to push an agenda. 3d1k November 15, 2014 at 12:12 pm I’ve assumed desmodronic is http://desmogblog.com I might be wrong! My personal view is there is still much to be learned about the mechanics of climate change over decades, centuries and more. The climatic history of our planet is embedded in geological formations which tell us climate has been a wild ride. The earth has already endured various cataclysmic changes far more extreme than even the most fanciful of IPCC predictions. And will do so again. I expect various IPCC ‘predictions’ to fail – CO2 is not the prime agent in climate change (which we so poorly understand). Many factors beyond human control contribute to change. It is the folly of humans to think we can master nature, control everything. Global warming activism has attracted a broad church. I am not yet a believer. Mambarino November 15, 2014 at 12:42 pm 2d, reading your views on climate is like asking a petrol station attendant what he thinks about brain surgery. It’s often amusing, but usually boring, and never enlightening. 😐 desmodromic November 16, 2014 at 7:57 pm @3d. Yep, you are wrong. That blog is nothing to do with me. What happened in geological time is mostly irrelevant to this debate. Biological systems fail when subject to rapid environmental change. That is now and climate change is part of the problem. If you doubt this, go to the Arctic or at least understand what this country has lost in the last 60 years. If you can’t be bothered, shut up. AusDreamNoMore November 15, 2014 at 11:46 am Mention indias population no because that’s racist. No government talks of overpopulation, big australia she’ll be right. Lift those 1 million dollar median house prices in Sydney even further! Ratcunning November 15, 2014 at 6:19 pm Since today’s Earth has a continent over the South Pole and an almost land-locked ocean over the North Pole, geologists believe that Earth will continue to experience glacial periods in the geologically near future. Some scientists believe that the Himalayas are a major factor in the current ice age, because these mountains have increased Earth’s total rainfall and therefore the rate at which carbon dioxide is washed out of the atmosphere, decreasing the greenhouse effect. The Himalayas’ formation started about 70 million years ago when the Indo-Australian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate, and the Himalayas are still rising by about 5 mm per year because the Indo-Australian plate is still moving at 67 mm/year. The history of the Himalayas broadly fits the long-term decrease in Earth’s average temperature since the mid-Eocene, 40 million years ago. Mambarino November 15, 2014 at 6:33 pm The key phrase, Rat, is “geologically near future”. That future is a few thousand years away, by which time, if we continue on our present course, we’ll be goners. Deniers like to refer to events in geological time, but hide the fact that we’ve only had any form of human civilization for 10 thousand years, and global warming could mean a 4-6+ deg rise in 100 or so years, effectively destroying that civilization. The Patrician November 15, 2014 at 7:05 pm Some data just in on the Qld/NSW Nov 2014 heatwave to date November Records have been smashed across Northern New South Wales and throughout Queensland as a Severe Heatwave rips through. Some places just got there, which was good enough. While others obliterated records beyond belief, spending hours above their previous record today. Not only was the temperature itself impressive, but some of these Records have stood for 70 years or more! 10 locations across the 2 States hit the books, with a few coming very close! QLD: • Amberley 43.0ºc (Previous – 42.1ºc 1944) • Kingaroy 38.8ºc (Previous – 38.3ºc 1965) • St George 43.3ºc (Equal – 43.3ºc 1968) • Warwick 39.8ºc (Previous – 38.0ºc 2009) • Edit: Stanthorpe ~37ºc (Previous – 35.7ºc 1996) NSW: • Casino 44.1ºc (All-Time Record!) (Previous All-Time: 44.0ºc Jan 1994) • Evans Head 42.2ºc (Previous – 38.5ºc 2009) • Grafton Research Station 42.9ºc (Previous – 41.0ºc 2002) • Inverell 38.6ºc (Previous – 38.3ºc 1968) • Narrabri 44.0ºc (Previous – 43.0ºc 1997) • Tamworth 41.9ºc (Previous – 41.2ºc 2009) Close Calls: • Gatton 42.5ºc (0.3ºc off) • Dalby 40.1ºc (0.4º off) • Moree 43.5ºc (0.1ºc off) • Walgett 44.6ºc (0.5ºc off) The scary thing for some of these locations, is they were forecast to have a hotter day tomorrow! So some of these Records may only last just the one day. While other places around mainly SEQ and NENSW are expected to be breaking or nearing Records tomorrow drsmithyMEMBER November 16, 2014 at 12:00 pm Measured 40.8 in the shade using a cooking thermometer about half an hour ago. My weather station up on the roof says 44.9 ! drsmithyMEMBER November 16, 2014 at 2:13 pm Highest temperature I saw in the shade today was 42. Weather station on the roof got to 46.1.
