Car sales continue to soften

The ABS has just released its May figures for new car sales and the trend is down slightly over the month, but up 0.3% in seasonally adjusted terms. Over the year there has been a solid 2% fall in sales (-3.3% trend) mainly from Queensland and Western Australia.

Here’s the state-by-state breakdown with a surge in sales in Victoria offsetting modest falls in the other major eastern states:

As for composition, its still all about SUVs which increased by 3.4% (trend 0.7%) whereas passenger/other decreased by 2% (trend 0.9%).
