Australia missing from top tourism list

From a few days ago, but vaguely interesting, the world’s top one hundred international tourism cities via Euromonitor. Here’s the top 20:

Sydney comes in at 51st with 2.6 million arrivals, up just 0.2% on the year, Melbourne is at 88th with 1.7 million, up 14%.

Frustratingly, these figures are from 2011.

I know we face the tyranny of distance and I should be cheerleading our tourism sector, but given the big growth is coming from North Asia it is arguable that Australia (Sydney at least) is not doing as well as it should be and may be losing tourism market share growth to other destinations.

Then again, this was during the high point for the dollar and Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi!
