Prime Minister Tony Abbott has left the door open to approve a push from the states to lower the $1,000 threshold for imposing the 10 per cent GST on overseas online purchases, at a meeting in Canberra on Wednesday.
“This is a matter for the states, the GST is essentially a state tax,” Mr Abbott said.
“My understanding is the states are concerned retail remains strong, that jobs in retail stay protected. We want a strong sector, we want to protect jobs in retailing.”
