NSW drives bounce in ABS job vacancies

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released job vacancies data for the August quarter, which revealed a seasonally adjusted bounce in job vacancies, driven almost exclusively by New South Wales:

According to the ABS, total job vacancies rose by a seasonally adjusted 3.1% over the quarter, with private sector vacancies rising by 3.0% and public sector vacancies rising by 4.5%.

There was a big jump in New South Wales, where job vacancies rose by 22.8% in seasonally adjusted terms. South Australia also recorded a rise (up 21.3%), whereas Victoria (down 8.0%), Queensland (down 3.7%), and Western Australia (down 10.3%) all recorded falling vacancies (see next chart).

In trend terms, however, job vacancies fell by a 3.7% over the August quarter, driven by a 4.1% decrease in vacancies in the private sector. Vacancies were also 21% lower over the year in trend terms.
