China’s “field of dreams”, “build it and they will come”, approach to construction continues.

Hot on the heels of opening the world’s longest bridge and world’s biggest building, as well as planning to construct the world’s longest undersea tunnel (see here), China’s authorities have begun construction on the world’s tallest building: an 838 metre (2,716.5 feet), 220 floor structure called Sky City tower (promotional video above). Once completed in April 2014, China will be home to five of the ten tallest buildings in the world.

According to The Diplomat, the project to assemble Sky City will be completed in only seven months by using an innovative technique that involves building prefabricated sections off-site and then assembling them on site, Lego style. The firm used the technique to put up a 30-story building in 15 days in 2011.

The project will cost a massive 5.25 billion yuan ($US855 million) and will include 1.6 million square metres of space ($US524 per square meter), housing apartments, shopping malls, a hotel for 1,000 guests, schools, theaters, and a hospital.

Just think of all the Australian iron ore and coking coal required in the construction.
