Corporate insolvencies rise in April

The Australian Securities & investments Commission (ASIC) has released corporate insolvencies data for the month of April, which registered a 2.5% increase in insolvencies over the month to 941, and an 8.3% increase over April 2012. A chart plotting the raw monthly data and the 3-month moving average (3MMA) is provided below:

As you can see, the data is highly volatile and presumably heavily affected by seasonality. As such, it is presented below on a rolling 12-month basis:

As you can see, the number of corporate insolvencies has been trending-upward for more than a decade. And while the trend steepened somewhat post-GFC, insolvencies have fallen over the past year.
