The first Newspoll survey for the new year, conducted exclusively for The Australian at the weekend, shows Labor’s primary vote rose six percentage points to 38 per cent compared to the last poll in early December.
The Coalition’s primary vote fell only two points to 44 per cent as Labor posted most of its gains at the expense of the Greens and others, suggesting a move towards the major parties.
…The Coalition retains a slight lead on a two-party-preferred basis, 51 to 49 per cent, but has lost three percentage points to return to the neck-and-neck position that produced a hung parliament at the 2010 election.
…Ms Gillard’s satisfaction rating rose two points to 38 per cent as the Prime Minister also gained two percentage points against Mr Abbott as preferred Prime Minister and now leads 45 per cent to 33 per cent. The proportion of uncommitted voters fell by one point to 22 per cent.
