Australia hit by “Revenue Rainbow” boosting Albanese’s fortunes

In the commentary from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Treasurer Jim Chalmers and other senior members of the government, the idea that the government is doing it tough because of X or Y issues stemming from external factors such as the war in the Middle East is often put forward as to why the economy or federal budget isn’t performing better.

When the RBA raises rates, or the Australian Bureau of Statistics releases unfavourable data, the government is swift to claim it’s due to an external catalyst.

But beneath these narratives lies a very different truth: one recently covered by UNSW Economics Professor Richard Holden and independent economist Chris Richardson, Australia has done very well despite events unfolding far beyond our borders.
