The greatest migration myth

As the political debate surrounding the right level of migration into Australia enters its latest chapter, the now increasingly prevalent claim that “net overseas migration can’t be controlled” is once again being trotted out.

Given that we lived through a pandemic in the last six years which encompassed lockdowns, some being prevented from visiting dying loved ones, and tight controls on interstate and international travel, all at the behest of government, the idea that the government “doesn’t have the power” to control migration doesn’t hold water.

The reality, for better or worse, is that government has a truly awesome amount of power.
