Jacinta Allan was was formally sworn in as Victoria’s 49th premier and only its second female leader on Wednesday evening, after being elected unopposed by Labor’s caucus. Ben Carroll will be deputy premier after withdrawing his nomination for the party’s leadership.

Natasha Bradshaw from the Grattan Institute says Victoria’s new premier Jacinta Allan should delay transport projects until their cost has been properly assessed, and until the state’s economy and debt position have improved.

Bradshaw adds that the state government should cancel the Suburban Rail Loop, whose cost has blown out to between $150 billion to $200 billion and has been estimated to have economic benefits of just $50 billion to $60 billion.
