China Outlook 2023: A swift and disorderly reopening

In just a few weeks, China scraped its ‘zero covid’ policy and embraced spiking COVID infections across the country, as the government pledged a return to its pro-growth stance. Most infectious diseases experts are now expecting infections in China to peak by the end of January 2023.

On the one hand, this suggests that China may emerge from the pandemic around next March, much sooner than most had expected. On the other hand, such relaxation also risks a chaotic reopening given the current unfavourable season and China’s under-vaccinated elderly.
