“Grand bargain” to open immigration floodgates

Details have emerged of a ‘grand bargain’ between business and unions that is likely to be struck at the federal government’s upcoming jobs and skills summit. It is expected to see migration boosted in the October budget to help fill urgent skill and labour shortfalls, in return for longer-term policies on training Australians:

A grand bargain that will seek to address the concerns of both business and the union movement will be a priority at the government’s jobs and skills summit to be held early next month…

It is understood the migration changes, yet to be finalised, will be rushed into the October 25 budget while some of the longer-term changes agreed to at the jobs summit will be fed into a white paper that will generate policies for subsequent budgets and the next election.
