Australia’s regions outperform capital cities

CBA’s economic team has released a series of charts and data analysing the relative performance Australia’s regions against the capital cities since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

CBA finds that “regional areas have generally outperformed their Greater Capital City counterparts during the pandemic” due to “the shift to working from home, which has made moving to regional areas feasible for many people, more severe lockdowns in some capital cities relative to the regions and health concerns which are related to living in more densely populated metropolitan areas”.

Not surprisingly, the relative outperformance of the regions is most stark in Victoria, owing to Melbourne’s harsh 16-week lockdown last year.
