Construction work continues to fall

The ABS has released data on the value of construction work done for the March quarter of 2016, which registered a seasonally-adjusted 2.6% fall in total construction activity over the quarter and a 6.7% decline over the year.

The 2.6% quarterly fall in construction activity was driven by engineering construction (mostly mining-related), which slumped by 4.2% in real terms. Building construction also fell by 1.0% over the quarter, with the 1.5% rise in residential construction not enough to offset the 5.5% fall in non-residential construction (see below chart).
