Chinese tourism growth goes vertical

The Australian Bureau of Statistics on Friday released its overseas short-term arrivals and departures figures for December, which continued to show a trend rise in the number of inbound tourists, especially from China.

The number of short-term visitor arrivals rose 1.0% in December in trend terms, whereas short-term resident departures rose by 0.6% over the month. The ratio of annual arrivals to departures also rose to 78.9%, which was the highest level since June 2011 (see next chart).
