The changing face of Australia’s immigration

The ABS today released its annual Migration report covering the 2013-14 financial year, which provides breakdowns of the composition of migration by visa class.

According to the ABS, the proportion of Australians born overseas has hit its highest point in 120 years as 28% of Australia’s population or 6.6 million people (see next table).

While the UK remains the biggest source of migrants, China and India has experienced the fastest growth over the past decade (see next chart).

Moreover, most of these Chinese and Indian migrants have settled in New South Wales and Victoria (see next table).
