Breaking news. Islamic extremists have taken over the Lindt cafe in Sydney’s Martin Place. From NineMSN:

Hostages have been forced to hold what appears to be an Islamic flag, identified as a shahada flag, in the cafe’s window reading “no god worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is his messenger”…

Twitter users are reporting a man was in the area armed with a shotgun.

“Police crawling over building where Chambers bar is,” Twitter user Sarah Gerathy wrote. “At least one has his gun drawn. Martin place blocked off between Elizabeth & Philip st.”

Workers in nearby buildings, including the Seven Network, have been ordered to evacuate the area…

Live Channel 9 updates are available at the Nine.MSN website. Apparently there are around 20 people being held hostage in the cafe.

More to come.
