Earth to loons: Oz would benefit from running the UN

The loon pond does not govern for Australia, it governs for itself. Never has this been more obvious than today, from The Australian:

Australia cannot nominate Kevin Rudd for the leadership of the United Nations without signalling its strong support for him, Malcolm Turnbull said today, contradicting Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s suggestion that Australia’s nomination would not be an endorsement.

…Prominent Liberals are also ramping up calls for their cabinet to thwart Mr Rudd, with Mr Turnbull’s own assistant minister James McGrath saying he would “not trust Kevin Rudd to operate a toaster”.

Eric Abetz, a former Liberal leader in the Senate, noted Mr Rudd’s own colleagues had branded him “a narcissist, a micromanager, an impulsive control freak and a psychopath”.

“Any cursory glance at Mr Rudd’s temperament and capacity would show that Mr Rudd is poorly qualified for this role and if Australia were to seek to inflict Kevin Rudd onto the United Nations, it would be a mistake,” Senator Abetz said.

Question: In what universe would it not be advantageous to have an Aussie running the UN?

Answer: None.

Rudd may be a pain, he may be all of things described above (and probably is) and it would still be enormously advantageous to the national interest to have him running the UN.

Eric Abetz is the one unqualified for his job.
