Inflation boosts Aussie retail sales

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released retail sales data for September, with total sales lifting 0.6% over the month to be 17.9% higher year-on-year:

The growth in sales was driven by strong growth in clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (+2.0%), cafes, restaurants and takeaway (+1.3%), and food retailing (+1.0%):

The ABS noted that monthly sales were boosted by the National Day of Mourning public holiday, which “boosted spending on food, alcohol and dining out”.
