The war state treasurers should be waging

New South Wales Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has proposed the creation of a new body to be called the “Board of Treasurers”, which would comprise treasurers from the eight states and territories, but would exclude the federal treasurer. Its proposed creation comes at a time when some states and territories are becoming increasingly irate over what they see as federal government attempts to encroach on their autonomy, unhappiness about possible changes to the way the GST is distributed, along with apparent attempts by the federal government to tell them how they should be allocating funds in the areas of housing and the homeless. The NSW government is proposing an uprising by key Australian states against the commonwealth, which could see Labor and Liberal-Nationals state governments unite to set up their own new treasurers’ coalition that cuts out the federal government entirely…
