Patrick Chovanec talks Abenomics
Please find above a Bloomberg Radio interview with Patrick Chovanec, chief global strategist at Silvercrest Asset Management, discussing various topics related to China and Japan.
For me, the most interesting part of the interview starts from the 5.00 minute mark, where Chovanec discusses Abenomics – Japan’s adventures in quantitative easing (amongst other things) – and its effect on the Japanese economy and markets.
Chovanec stresses that Abenomics is unlikely to be successful unless Japan embarks on structural reforms (e.g. liberalising labour markets), in order to boost productivity, as well as reforms to immigration.
He also notes that there is real concern amongst Japanese that the islands dispute with China could lead to war.
For those who are interested, Chovanec also gave an interesting video interview (below) on Bloomberg TV last night discussing the outlook for the US equities market, as well as the prospect of the Federal Reserve winding back quantitative easing.
